Nutrition and Mental Health Panel

The UWHA Nutrition and Mental Health speaker panel was such an informative and inspiring event. We hosted current and former coaches, nutritionists and health professionals who gave female student-athletes better insight to what proper fueling can provide for our bodies and performance levels as intense athletes. Sports dietician Meg Schrier, sports nutritionist Amanda Waldron, Coach Ali Sanders, and Coach Jackie Puccino collaborated in answering our questions and covered dimensions that will help is as Harvard female student athletes from a health perspective and an organizational standpoint. We are so grateful to have these resources and knowledge available to us on campus and look forward to enlightening more female athletes about the importance of food and mental health in sports.

The speakers included two female varsity head coaches: Carrie Moore, The Kathy Delaney-Smith Head Coach of Harvard Women’s Basketball, and Jennifer Weiss, the Head Coach of Women’s Volleyball. Both coaches touched on their experience in athletics, drawing on both perspectives during your time at Harvard, former coaching experiences, and former experiences as an accomplished college female athlete. This was a casual, social event providing athletes and coaches from different teams to meet each other and celebrate Women in Athletics. Intuitive Eating with Christy Harrison

On September 24th, 2020, Christy Harrison (MPH, RD, CDN) joined us for a conversation on intuitive eating and its application to female athletes. Over the course of the presentation, Christy shared the 10 principles of intuitive eating and how we can listen to and honor our hunger cues as they arise. We also learned the importance of properly fueling (and refueling) our bodies in order to better both our physical health and our athletic performance. Those who attended thoroughly enjoyed Christy’s refreshing and scientific approach to eating, and many have since implemented her suggestions in their own daily lives. For more on Christy, check out her book Anti-Diet and her podcast Food Psych.

Body Image with Victoria Garrick

On February 4th, 2020 we welcomed Victoria Garrick, a former USC volleyball player and current body image and mental health advocate. Victoria gave our members an amazing presentation on her own battles against an eating disorder, body image, and mental health problems before having a more intimate discussion with members who felt inspired to share their thoughts, too. Victoria’s presence encouraged many Harvard female athletes to bring topics like body image and eating to their teams and UWHA is looking to continue this important conversation in more speaker events and discussions in the future.
